Budapest Zoo
Of all the attractions available in Budapest, we have chosen to pick out the Budapest Zoo; both because it is a spectacular attraction that many visitors do not think about visiting, but also because we are proud of, and would like to support, our local Zoo.
The Budapest Zoo was first opened in 1866 and in addition to the animals it also offers impressive architecture, most dating back to 1909-1912 when the zoo was reorganized and reconstructed. The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is not big in international comparison, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with its architecture, selection of animals, and the many world records set by the zoo caretakers.
Successful Breeding
Among the records, the Budapest Zoo can boast that in 2007 the world’s first Rhino from direct artificial insemination was born and in October 2008 a baby brother arrived, being the first from frozen sperm. Budapest is also the main ‘exporter’ of Golden-bellied Mangabey monkeys as there are only three zoos in the world where they successfully breed regularly.
There are always newcomers to the Zoo; amongst the latest additions are two leopards born in September 2008.
New Savannah
During most of 2008, a large area of the zoo was undergoing re-construction. This autumn it inaugurated its new savannah area, as well as a new Elephant/Rhino house in addition to the existing elephant house.
In April 2008, a baby Komodo Dragon was brought to the zoo from the zoo in Chester and it was named Irwin in honour of the tragically deceased wild life expert and conservationist, Steve Irwin.
Even if you have been to the Budapest Zoo before, it is always a good place to spend the day or maybe just an afternoon.
